Daniel Ricciardo injured in hospital – is the race in danger now?

Daniel Ricciardo is in hospital for a possible hand injury and risks missing the rest of the weekend

After his accident during the second practice session for the Formula 1 race in Zandvoort in 2023, Daniel Ricciardo is in the hospital for further examinations. The Australian had injured his hand in an impact in turn 3 and then complained of pain in his left hand.

In a brief statement, the FIA said: “We can confirm that Daniel Ricciardo was taken to a local hospital for further examinations following his accident in the second practice session.”

Red Bull’s motorsport consultant Helmut Marko also confirmed to ‘Sky’ that the AlphaTauri driver had to see the doctors again: “He’s in the hospital for an X-ray,” says the Austrian. “I hope he didn’t seriously or severely damage his hand. The impact and counter-impact can have a massive impact on the wrist.”

For Ricciardo, his third Formula 1 weekend after his comeback doesn’t exactly start positively. Should he fail for the rest of the weekend, AlphaTauri would need a replacement pilot. The first contender would probably be Liam Lawson, who is the official replacement driver for Red Bull and AlphaTauri.

Theoretically, it would also be conceivable for the previous regular driver Nyck de Vries to take part in his home round, although he only lost his cockpit to Ricciardo before the weekend in Hungary. At least he would have a lot more experience than the New Zealander, for whom it would be the first Grand Prix ever.

Ricciardo drove against the barriers in turn 3 through his own fault. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri had previously lost his car in the curve and parked across the track. Although yellow flags were waved, Ricciardo still drove towards his standing compatriot and dodged the barrier at the last moment.

“I haven’t seen the McLaren,” he said on the radio. “It was too late.” Because the incident took place after about ten minutes of the session, Ricciardo was classified as 20th and last. He was 13th in the first session.

It remains to be seen whether he can take part over the weekend.
