A German arrested in Italy at the instigation of Turkey is free again. A court in Sardinia has revoked the extradition arrest warrant against Devrim A., said his lawyer Antonia von der Behrens on Monday.
According to the lawyer, A. was arrested while on vacation on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia at the beginning of August and has been under house arrest ever since. The basis for the arrest was a Turkish request to Interpol. Now the Berliner can travel back to Germany.
A. only has German citizenship
According to the lawyer, A., who is of Kurdish origin, was accused of membership in the banned Kurdish workers’ party PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe and the USA. The lawyer described the proceedings as obviously politically motivated.
Your client was specifically accused of supporting the PKK in IT issues in northern Iraq in 2005. At that time he was working as a journalist in northern Iraq, but he had “no connections to the PKK.” A. is currently working as a translator and Kurdologist in Berlin. He only has German citizenship.
