The condition of the 52-year-old is critical. He’s in intensive care. Only at the end of the season did he resign from his post as managing director at Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam.

14 years ago, van der Sar’s wife Annemarie also suffered a brain hemorrhage. His former employers Ajax tweeted: “Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We think of you!”

During his active time, van der Sar brought it to 130 international matches and played for world clubs Ajax, Juventus Turin and Manchester United, among others.
