King Charles III and Queen Camilla each have a private secretary. However, it has now emerged that the two employees are not paid equally.
The palace has to publish the expenses of the British royal family every year in the so-called Sovereign Grant Report. It is not uncommon for there to be a surprise or two. Now the report, which appeared last month, is causing trouble. As “Mirror” reports, it appears that the private secretary of King Charles III. and Queen Camilla’s private secretary receive a significantly different salary. The fact that Charles’ employee earns more than twice as much is met with incomprehension.
That’s how much King Charles’ private secretary earns
Accordingly, Sir Clive Alderton, who has been taking care of Charles’ affairs since 2006, earns a whopping 205,000 to 210,000 pounds a year, which is the equivalent of between almost 239,000 and 245,000 euros. Sophie Densham, who has been working for Camilla since 2008 and has been doing the same for the Queen since 2021 as Sir Clive Alderton has for the King, only earns the equivalent of around 105,000 to 110,000 euros a year – not even half. “I’m really shocked at the disparity and I’m amazed at Sophie’s salary – that’s a kick in the butt,” said a former senior Buckingham Palace official.
Another source told Express: One has to wonder if this pay disparity is based on gender and not seniority. Sophie is known to be a very capable and dedicated supporter of the Queen.” No statement has yet been made by the palace itself on the debate.
