After leaving Bayern, Oliver Kahn was quiet for a long time. The 54-year-old has significantly withdrawn from the public eye in recent months and has focused primarily on his business activities away from football. Now the ex-Bayern boss appeared on the green lawn again – in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Pro League spent almost 950 million euros on new players in the past summer transfer period. Only the English Premier League is (significantly) ahead of the SPL with 2.8 billion euros. The desert state wants to present its league with all its might on the big football stage.
No club in Europe can compete with the financial clout of the state-subsidized clubs in Saudi Arabia. Many fans, media and experts are already warning of the long-term consequences if UEFA/FIFA does not intervene promptly.
Kahn visits instead of the Saudi Pro League
While many football managers in Germany strongly and clearly criticize the transfer madness from Saudi Arabia, Oliver Kahn apparently wanted to get a personal impression of the SPL on site.
The former Bayern boss published a snapshot of his trip to Saudi Arabia on Twitter. In the picture, the 54-year-old poses next to Brazilian superstar Neymar with a grin.
“As part of my trip, I am visiting the Saudi Pro League clubs. Many thanks to Al-Hilal FC for welcoming me to their legendary club. A great moment to meet with coaches, players and their superstar,” said Kahn, commenting on the picture together with Neymar, who moved from Paris to Al-Hilal in the summer for almost 100 million euros.
