Ben Hodges, former head of US forces in Europe, has criticized German proposals for a ceasefire and talks with Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin. “The strategic importance of Crimea in this conflict is enormous. Russia’s occupation means it has the ability to blockade all Ukrainian ports,” Hodges told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He added: “Those who suggest Ukraine should give up Crimea do not understand economics or geography. I wonder if these people would be willing to give up regions like Lower Saxony or Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Germany would never consider this, but that is exactly what is expected of Ukraine.” Hodges stressed Crimea’s critical position in terms of Ukraine’s recovery. Without full access to the Sea of Azov, he sees the country’s reconstruction at risk.
