ARD and ZDF have shared the transmission of the women’s soccer World Cup games between themselves. Here you can find out where which games are running, which are only shown in the live stream and when Germany is playing.
Next week, on July 20, 2023, the Women’s World Cup will start in Australia and New Zealand. The dispute over the broadcasting rights between FIFA and the TV broadcasters had dragged on for several months. Then FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly threatened a blackout. That was averted. Thanks to a deal with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), ARD and ZDF are now showing the entire World Cup live. You can find out how the two broadcasters divided the games between themselves here.
ARD and ZDF share the live broadcast of the games
In principle, ARD and ZDF alternate with the broadcast. The games with German participation (from July 24) will also be shown alternately. Every game that is shown on free TV can also sportstudio.de (ZDF) or on sportschau.de (ARD) can be followed in the live stream. Joyn’s free live stream shows the games on both channels.
Despite the agreement, not all games will be shown on free TV. For a long time there was a struggle about the transmission times: Due to the time difference, many games start early in the morning, sometimes at night – one of the reasons why private providers such as DAZN, Sky and RTL withdrew. In the case of the less attractive times and pairings, ARD and ZDF broadcast exclusively in the live stream and not on linear television. For the games on July 30 and August 2, ARD has not yet made a decision as to which of the games taking place at the same time will be broadcast live and which will be broadcast linearly.
