| Tripoli— Libyan women who were raped during the uprising in 2011 are to be offered compensation by the government and recognized as war victims, according to a law to be issued by the interim Libyan government. The Libyan Minister of Justice Salah al-Marghani told reporters on Wednesday that the measure is to be also applied to men rape victims.“The measure is part of a package of transitional justice and the transition from revolution to the state,” Marghani said. This decision by the government will indeed help the society to face up such problem in Libya and will encourage individual victims to come out and defend themselves, demand their rights and also benefit from it psychologically. The exact number of rape victims is not available but local civil society organizations with help from international organizations are working on establishing a data base for these victims. The Minister of Justice also announced a decision by the Council of Ministers aimed at the reinstatement of King Idris al-Sanusi and his family.King Idris was the founder of modern Libya and became the King from 1951 to the end of August 1969 when he was ousted by a coup d’ etat led by dictator Muammar Gaddafi who was then first lieutenant. | ||
