| Libya’s national carrier and state-owned Libyan Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A330-200, a 259-seater plane that will be used on the carrier’s longer-haul routes. The aircraft touched down in Tripoli midweek after flying from Toulouse, where Airbus has its main manufacturing base.It is the first A330 aircraft to be operated by Libyan Airlines, which already has seven A320s in its fleet. Afriqiyah Airways, the other state-owned Libyan carrier, already runs several A330s.John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers said: “We are pleased to welcome Libyan Airlines as a new operator of the A330 family aircraft.”He went on to say that Liibya has great potential and its fleet is comprised of predominantly Airbus aircraft. “With the A330-200, Libyan Airlines will benefit from the aircraft’s low operating costs, proven reliability and great passenger appeal,” he said.Airbus said that the new plane would be “deployed in the Middle East, around Dubai and Jeddah, as well as on Asian and European trunk routes.”It has a two-class configuration, with 24 business class seats and 235 economy class seats.Libyan Airlines has a further three A330-200 planes on order, as well as four A350-800 aircraft. Afriqiyah is also expecting to take delivery of more Airbus planes in the coming years.Libya’s airport capacity is already straining to accommodate the new planes, partly because work on new terminals has stalled since 2011. |
